One of the India’s rich bioresources, forest resources in general and the diverse timber resources in particular is known to be in use since Vedic times.  Advancements in technology has enabled efficient use of thee resources and also better understanding of wood as a unique renewable raw material, its utility in various applications applicatios has expanded considerably.  Institutions throughout the world engaged in conducting research on forestry, particularly in utilization of wood have screened and evaluated numbers of tree species for their desirable and for further processing for various end uses to meet both industrial and domestic requirements.  The quantum of requirement of from the construction and furniture sector stands next only to that of fuel wood and pulp industry, emphasising the increasing demand.  A huge gap exists between the demand and supply position requires immediate attention.  The options available to bridge this gap are, generating tree resources and thus increase the availability of raw material through plantation timbers which is a long term programme. whereas, on a short term basis import of timber has been the other option.  With the liberalization of import policy under OGL, import of timber has helped in meeting the demand partially.
